Disputes with Disney

In gratitude for his success with Disney / Touchstone film Good Morning, Vietnam, Robin Williams voiced the Genie in the Disney animated film Aladdin for SAG scale pay ($ 75,000), on condition that his name or image is not used for marketing purposes, and his (supporting) character not more than 25% of the space to advertising artwork, since Toys was scheduled for release one month after Aladdin's debut. The studio went back to the business in both respects, especially in poster art by the genius shown in 25% of the image, but with other major and supporting characters much smaller. Disney's Hyperion book, Aladdin: The Making Of an animated movie, performed both Williams' character "The peddler" and "Genius" in front of the main characters, but was forced to him only as a "Actor signed to play the Genie."

Williams and Disney had a bitter falling out, and expressed as a result Dan Castellaneta, the Genie in The Return of Jafar, the Aladdin animated television series and had recorded his voice for Aladdin and the King of Thieves. When Jeffrey Katzenberg was fired and replaced by Disney by the former 20th Century Fox production head Joe Roth (Its last act was green lighting for Fox Williams' film Mrs. Doubtfire), Roth arranged for a public Apology to Williams by Disney. Williams agreed, in Hollywood Pictures' Making Jack, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and even agreed to voice the Genie again for the King of Thieves sequence (for considerably more than scale) and replaced all the dialogue Castellaneta.

When Williams returned with Doubtfire director Chris Columbus for the year 1999, Bicentennial Man Disney asked that the budget be reduced from approximately $ 20,000,000, when the film was released on Christmas Day, it flopped at the box office. Williams blamed Disney's marketing and the loss of contents of the film suffered because of budget cuts had. As a result, Williams was again on bad with Disney, and Castellaneta was once again adjusted to him as a genius in the Kingdom Hearts video game series, replacing the House of Mouse TV series. The DVD release for Aladdin has no involvement at all of Williams in the bonus material, although to see some of his original recording sessions.
