Soft Rifle Case
i am looking for any info on a rifle i have it is marked CARL GUSTAFS STADS GEVARSFAKTORI 1930?
I Inherited a house and found this in the rafters other than some surface rust (was kept in a soft/cotton gun case) everything works im thinking of having it restored to fix the rust i appreciate any info any one has
1930 is the year of manufacture. This rifle is made in sweden, and most likely chambered for 6.5×55. It is commonly referred to as a Swedish Mauser, or M96.
The 96 designates the Mauser patent year, 1896. There are a million Mauser variations, but only two types…pre-98 and post 98.
The Swedish Mauser is the only Mauser to continue being made on a pre-98 pattern after the 1898 pattern emerged.
They are also the only Mausers that have the year of manufacture on them, instead of the caliber or model number.
The Swedish pre-98s are not only the finest pre-98s around, but some would argue the finest Mausers, period.
In 1938, they shortened the barrel length. These rifles are identical mechanically, but shorter overall. They are designated M38.
None of these are actually Mausers, because they were made in Sweden , mostly by Carl Gustavs. But they are Mauser patents. The handfull that were made for Sweden by the German Mauser company, had to be made with Swedish steel, by request of the Swedish government.
Not too long ago, these were very inexpensive. Now they are hard to find.
Parts are readily available for it.
There is one certain Swedish Mauser that is the hardest of them all to find, and it looks like an Enfield or Mannlicher. The model number escapes me now. The guts are the same,but the stock runs all the way to the front of the barrel. The gun is rather short, compared to other bolt-guns of the same time period. This particular Swedish Mauser is the most valuable one.
